“At the time, Chrysler rated the Street HEMI-equipped Dodge Coronet at 425hp, although like many classic muscle cars, this was believed to be highly underrated with figures closer to 460hp believed to be more accurate.” –Street Muscle magazine, February 2014
The 1966 Dodge Coronet 500 Convertible Tribute restoration offered here pays homage to the very rare original, only nine of which were made in this particular combination. The exterior yellow paint with black-fabric power-operated convertible top makes for a standout statement of MOPAR design, while the 426 cubic-inch HEMI V8 delivers the muscle that set this car apart from its performance competition back in the mid-Sixties.
The quality of this restoration is evident in the straight body and perfect paint-application. The yellow finish is glossy and consistent across the expansive body. All proper factory badging is in place, including the bespoke “426 Hemi” and “Coronet 500” fender emblems. The four-headlight, divided grille is characteristic of just two model years of the Coronet. Chrome trim across the body is virtually perfect. Dual exhaust, styled steel wheels, and red-stripe tires offer Sixties-era cues to a performance automobile.
The car's interior continues the expertly restored theme. The dashboard is perfectly stock with its horizontal layout and 120-mph speedometer behind a wood-rim steering wheel. Audio entertainment comes courtesy of the pushbutton factory AM radio. A period-correct console-mounted tachometer is in place, just forward of the automatic-transmission shifter surrounded by wood-veneer trim. Black-vinyl seating surfaces front and back feature a horizontal pleated design echoed on the door-panel trim. Lap belts are present, and the convertible top folds down beneath a black-vinyl cover.
Under the hood, the beautifully detailed 426 Hemi V8 engine—itself a legendary piece of automotive history—holds forth beneath a “426 Hemi Head" branded chrome air cleaner over twin 4-barrel carburetors. Chrome valve covers, complement the Mopar-orange paint on the block. The car's original steel data plate remains mounted on the cowl. Underneath, the car's chassis is clean and provides the perfect backdrop for the massive snake-like exhaust headers and racing-inspired dual-exhaust routing.
The exceptional, full-restoration condition of this '66 Coronet 500 Tribute is faithfully presented from every angle (including from below) in the more than 155 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available at the GarageKeptMotors site. That said, we always encourage in-person, up-close inspections by interested parties—or their representatives—at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. We ask only that advance appointments be made by phone or email so that we can devote our full attention to our visitors and this very special automobile. Our showroom is not open to the public.
Quoting the authoritative Street Car Muscle magazine again: “... in the muscle-car game, it was that HEMI and the cars it was attached to that set Dodge apart from other muscle-car manufacturers of the day, and made a name and reputation for the brand that holds up nearly 50 years later.“ This Coronet 500 Tribute captures that historic essence perfectly. From the Woodward Dream Cruise to Friday-night car gatherings at the local drive-in, expect this yellow beauty to draw crowds and compliments.
