2018 BMW 440xi Coupe M Sport

“Immediately the 440i feels right.” -Automobile Magazine, May, 2017 First Drive

Automobile Magazine's first-experience report on BMW's 440i face-lifted coupe continued: “As the engine charms you, other details start to flood in, building a picture of a cohesive car. The steering feels super-clean and even has some detail bubbling back through it, and the way the 440i changes direction breeds an immediate confidence. It's decisive but never overly pointy and very soon you simply relax your grip of the wheel and let the car take the strain. On the autobahn that easy poise and tight control makes cruising at close to the… 124 mph limit seem entirely natural.”

At about the same time, Car and Driver 440i review concurred, but put it more simply: “Updates bolster an already solid package.”

Offered here is an absolutely pristine example of this special “solid package” BMW model. This coupe is fully optioned with both the XDrive system to master difficult weather, and the M Sport package (labeled “a bargain” by one reviewer) adding suspension upgrades and tasty “M” identification throughout. “Pristine” is no overstatement, either: The car has had just one owner who clocked an almost unbelievably low total of just 6,126 miles. Indeed, this may be the lowest-mileage 2018 440xi coupe in the country!

This 440xi qualifies for more superlatives, including “flawless.” The Mineral Gray metallic paint displays showroom finish throughout. This exterior color gives the car a classic and restrained look and avoids flashiness. It nicely showcases the split-spoke alloy wheels. Up front, gloss black trim surrounding the trademark kidney-shaped BMW grille, and the massive air intakes of the lower fascia, however, cue onlookers to the car's uniqueness. A quick look at the rear of the car and its twin “M Sport”-engraved exhaust outlets and carbon-fiber trunk-lid spoiler bears out that assessment.

Inside, the car displays a number of tasteful touches. Step over the “M” (BMW for “motorsport”) logo on the door trim and flashes of BMW-blue on all the door trim catch the eye. Matching-color deviated stitching on all the black Dakota-leather seat upholstery adds the perfect visual complement: restrained out-of-the-ordinary flair. Befitting a performance coupe, the controls and instrumentation—including for navigation and entertainment—are laid out in a decidedly driver-focused manner and surrounded by aluminum trim. The “M” logo at the base of the leather-trimmed steering wheel serves as an everyday reminder that this is no everyday BMW.

The car's engine bay showcases one of the automobile industry's singular achievements: the legendary BMW inline six. Renowned for its combination of delightful smoothness and responsive power, those who have experienced it are uniform in their praise; those who have not can look forward to a real delight. To be expected in this low-mileage car, the engine bay is tidy, complete, and without a speck of dirt. That holds true for the entire undercarriage.

To fully appreciate the car's condition, be sure to take a careful look at the more than 170 high-resolution photographs and the short walk-around-startup video on our GrageKeptMotors.com site. As to equipment, the complete list is shown in the close-up photograph of the car's window sticker.

Of course, driving a sport-crafted BMW is a special experience. Europe's Driving magazine described some of the 440i's behind-the-wheel experience thusly: “Indeed, a few impromptu drag races… had the 440i showing up peers with 30 and even 40 more horsepower. Flip the car into Sport and response perks up, not to mention growl with significantly more authority. On this last, however, it should be noted that 440i emits the same heartfelt growl every time it starts up, BMW seemingly deciding to open the exhaust system's flapper valve that everyone might enjoy its newfound sportiness. Juvenile boy-racers loved it, neighbours trying to catch a few last-minute winks not so much.” And handling? “…M Performance attire was expected to dial up the road holding a little. But BMW claims that even the base 440i's dampers have manned up a little, the better to strafe hairpin. It also rides some 40 millimetres lower than the sedan and 20 millimetres closer to the ground than the convertible. The result is the 440i feeling more responsive than any in recent memory….”

The full array of owner information manuals accompanies the car's original window sticker, also showing the $64,730 factory list price.

It's a safe bet that there are few, if any BMW 440xi's with this equipment package and in this condition available anywhere. We are pleased it found its way to our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom where it can be seen by appointment. But call to schedule as soon as possible. We don't expect that this particular ownership opportunity will be available very long.
