“After a mere 5 miles of continuous curves, I slapped the steering wheel with my palms and said aloud, 'Now this is a car!'” –Peter Egan, Road & Track, 11/7/12

That comment, coming as it does from the legendary automotive journalist summarizing his hands-on experience with the car, and its first-place finish in a six-car comparison, pretty well captures the thrill and pleasure of piloting this true driver's sports car. That the other five convertible-top subjects of the Road & Track comparison included cars from Jaguar, Mercedes, Maserati, and Lexus lets you know how high a bar the Porsche 911 sailed over. He went on: “Not to imply that the other subjects of this test are anything less, but the Porsche has such delightful blend of horsepower, suspension compliance, cornering grip and gearbox precision — topped off by a lovely view down the hood that really does remind you of the ethereal 550 Spyder — it's hard not to become effusive. Like the Maserati, the 911 feels as if there's a highly evolved race car just beneath the surface, but the Porsche comes with an added dash of logic, civility and balance.”

If you're shopping Porsche 911s in the 996 series, the time-honored classic-car purchasing advice holds true: Buy the best one you can afford. The Seal Grey Metallic over Graphite Grey Leather 6-speed example offered here is absolutely up to that standard. An $87,000 sticker, one-owner car with just 2,200 miles per year (under 35,000 documented miles in all) over its life, the car's condition is exceptional in every respect. “Spotless”—an often over-used descriptor—truly applies to this Porsche in every respect. While the best way to fully assess the car's condition and charms is an in-person inspection—which we encourage by appointment—the more than 180 photographs and the short walk-around video available at the GarageKeptMotors site are a good substitute.

Every surface of the car shows virtually “as new.” The condition of the classic Seal Grey paint (including on the valances, lower side trim, and door bottoms), the black-fabric power-folding top, the 17-inch wheels sporting colored Porsche crests is exemplary across the board. Inside, the leather seating surfaces and carpeting, the steering wheel, the switchgear and gauges are all pristine. Lifting the rear hood out back reveals the 320-horsepower flat-six boxer engine looking just the way it did when this cabriolet left Zuffenhausen. As important, the engine sounds as good as it looks. Even the car's undercarriage, including its suspension components, are virtually spotless. While there may be a few 2003 911s in private garages somewhere that match this car's condition, we have a hard time believing there are any that surpass it.

A small, but telling, indicator of how this Porsche was loved is the slightly yellowed original window sticker with the car's full option list, including the sports package. Only a truly committed owner holds onto this sticker, as well as all the other factory literature that's included here. The next owner of this collectible 911 will really be its next caretaker, cherishing this car for years to come, and ultimately passing it along in the same outstanding condition it displays today.

Owning a Porsche 911 of this vintage, in this condition is both a driver's delight and a personal commitment to its future custodians.
