“Lift off the brake when the light goes green, and the engine revives instantly-with silky smoothness-courtesy of the electric motor….” –Kim Reynolds, Motor Trend, 3/15/09

The integration of an electric motor and lithium-ion battery system with a 275-horsepower 3.5-liter gasoline-fed V6 to propel a fully turned-out Mercedes S-Class executive sedan was a significant technical achievement back in 2010. The increase in torque by over 40%, as well as the more efficiently produced 20 additional horsepower from the electric side of the powerplant, were favorably received by the automotive press. In particular, writers like the Motor Trend reviewer quoted above, marveled at how seamlessly the car performed: “Acceleration is liquidy-smooth, capable of hitting 60 mph in an estimated 7.1 sec and a top speed limited to 130 mph. While slowing, the engine usually switches off at 15 mph and, frankly, you have to watch the instrument display's icon representation of the hybrid's goings on to recognize any of this.” No quirks or drawbacks at all to the integration of the two systems, with the only way to even identify the hybrid from outside the car coming from its discreet trunk-lid badge. As a hybrid, the S400 is partially electric-powered, but it's 100% Mercedes Benz.

The S400 Hybrid offered here is an excellent example. As the more than 200 photographs of the car and the walk-around video available on the GrarageKeptMotors site clearly show, the condition of the surfaces and finishes throughout demonstrate the care bestowed by the two prior owners over the car's 56,000 miles, a very conservative 6,000 miles per year. The consistent regular servicing of the car by Mercedes dealers (at no greater frequency than gasoline-only Mercedes cars) documented by Carfax is indicative of this owner pride and commitment. In the same way, accident damage to the vehicle in 2014 was fastidiously corrected leaving no indication whatsoever of any flaw at all. The car's title is spotless.

Inside and out, this S400 presents as quite literally, “like new.” From the 5-spoke AMG-branded sport wheels and fresh Yokahama Avid Ascend GT tires, to the uniform gloss of the classic Palladium silver paint, to the tint on the panoramic glass sunroof, exterior finishes are superb. Inside, the black leather upholstery, burled wood trim, gauges (including the center-dash analog clock) are all pristine. The car's engine bay is squeaky clean, as is the undercarriage.

The car's options include the sport package, premium package (including heated steering wheel and seats) and the full complement of driver-assistance aids rivaling many newer cars. The Motor Trend reviewer again: “Among the S-Class's astonishing electronic dazzlements are Adaptive Highbeam Assist which enlists the radar to sense to the distance of oncoming traffic, and Pre-Safe Brake which similarly detects and an impending crunch and warns you 2.6 sec before impact, at 1.6 seconds applies 50% of its maximum braking, and at 0.6 sec frantically throws out the anchor. Another feature, Torque Vectoring Brake, aids turn-in crispness via a polite squeeze of an inboard rear brake to help rotate the car. Meanwhile, Night View Assist Plus highlights any murky nighttime shapes on its screen that could be human.”

At its introduction, the S400 was hailed for delivering “the lowest CO2 emissions in the luxury segment.” While full-electric cars launched since have pre-empted this claim, what cannot be pre-empted is the uniquely Mercedes experience of a stately, well-equipped executive sedan delivering enhanced efficiency and timeless good looks combined with unmatched comfort and driver satisfaction. The new owner of this S400 Hybrid will be the beneficiary of all that.
