Do we have your attention? Just as the original Grand Sport Corvette caught the attention of some noteworthy racing drivers, we hope that this car is one that you really take a close look at. It's modeled after the slightly radical (at the time) styling of the first Grand Sport cars that were gone as quickly as they appeared, thanks to penny-pinching executives at GM. Only five were produced and were purchased by racing teams, so to create a slightly different take on the car based upon a '66 coupe sounds like a great proposition to us. The car you see here is a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe modeled in a similar form to the Grand Sport Coupe. It is finished in Blue and White, over a black interior, and shows approximately 35,984 miles on the mechanical odometer.

The original Grand Sport was an idea of Zora Arkus-Duntov, in which he wished to create an ultimate road-racing Corvette coupe. Thinner body panels, aluminum components such as a space frame, and slightly smaller bodies were the major parts of the equation. Of course a more powerful engine was a major component as well, in the form of a 377 cubic-inch, 550 horsepower small-block V8 which could send the car rip-roaring along on a track. This Grand Sport Tribute was the idea of an owner who had a '66 Coupe and the desire to build something a little different than the standard restored car.

This coupe did leave the St.Louis production plant in Nassau Blue, which as you may know, is a slightly different shade of blue than the car is currently. The current shade of blue looks to be Admiral Blue, as seen on the C4 Generation Corvette Grand Sport. The white accent stripes follow with the C4 generation exterior treatment. A white “nose” at the front of the car however, was something that was seen on the sixties Grand Sport cars. The paint on this car shows well with even gloss and rich color. The body panels line up very nicely, including the elaborate hood. The finned openings of the hood are functional in venting heat from the engine, letting cool air flow through the engine bay, as well as show that this car means business.

A standard interior is a bit of a relief, rather than roll bars, harnesses, toggle switches, and a lack of comforts which you might expect in a race car tribute. The interior is finished in black as the car left the factory, and features an aftermarket three-spoke steering wheel, standard grouping of gauges, vertical radio, and a big shiny shift knob. The interior components are all in great condition including the carpet and headliner.
This car was built well before the seemingly common LS based engine swap, so a 355 cubic-inch V8, which is fed by 4 Weber side draft carburetors takes pride of place in the engine bay. The engine provides not only an amazing sound, but also a nice powerband which passenger and driver alike can enjoy. Other engine upgrades include MSD Ignition components, a Griffin Radiator, and of course a fancy intake manifold to mate up to the carburetors. A 4-speed manual transmission handles gear selection.

The original Grand Sport concept of 1963 caught the attention of racing teams and drivers like AJ Foyt, and Roger Penske. Though only 5 were made and are now unattainable, you can have your own Grand Sport which was built with the original concept in mind. It's got great looks, is in great condition, and has a responsive engine which is guaranteed to become a talking point every time the hood is opened. This is a special car, don't be a penny pincher like the GM execs in the mid sixties, make a move to own this car. Please call if interested or e-mail with questions. Thank you for looking.
