(Please note: If you happen to be viewing this 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo on a website other than our Garage Kept Motors site, it's possible that you've only seen some of our many photographs of the SUV due to third-party website limitations. Hagerty provides some Cherokee history: “Jeep traditions are proudly held, dating back to the original Willys MB of 1941 and continued through the CJ series to today's Wrangler. Another integral part of Jeep's past is the 1984-2001 XJ Cherokee, the first American unibody compact SUV, which set the pattern for many imitators. It was sold in nearly every country in the world and in true Jeep fashion, the XJ profile was recognizably the same from beginning to end.”

“The XJ Jeep Cherokee was the company's first new model since the 1960s. Its origins dated back to 1978, when AMC and Renault designers were jointly working on a replacement for the bulky SJ Cherokee. Veteran designer Dick Teague took charge of the project and opted for both two- and four-door compact Sportwagons. These featured an immensely strong unibody design with 3200 welds to create a rigid structure light enough to utilize a smaller engine than previously employed. The XJ Cherokee weighed 1200 pounds less than the SJ it replaced.”

“The XJ had more ground clearance, better articulation and steeper approach, departure and breakover angles than the old Cherokee. It was much more agile off-road.”

Offered here is a 1992 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) Laredo in Star Silver Metallic over gray. Showing 107,751 miles on its odometer, the Jeep has traveled roughly 3,600 miles per-year on average over its 30-year life. Its Carfax history shows an accident with front-end damage in 2012. Any damage has been long since fully repaired with no evidence of the repair remaining.

The exterior metallic silver paint shows very well with excellent gloss and a smooth, even finish across all body panels. Apart from a minor dent on the driver's-side A-pillar, there are no other significant dents or dings on any sheet metal. Painted bumpers, fender flares, and lower-body cladding are all free of damage as well. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) A thin red accent stripe surrounds the body, including across the lift-up tailgate. The chrome 7-opening grille and mirror caps—part of the Laredo package—retain a like-new appearance. Twin, adjustable roof-bar supports are original; chrome side-window rain deflectors are aftermarket. Lightly tinted cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear and uncracked. All factory badging is in place, including the “Jeep” hood lettering, “Cherokee Laredo” front-fender emblems, “4x4” rear-fender emblems, and a “4.0 Liter” engine badge and another “Jeep” emblem on the tailgate. Stock, 5-spoke, Jeep-branded, 15-inch alloy wheels are mounted with Custom 428 All Season 215/75 thin-whitewall tires.

The Cherokee's gray-themed interior has been beautifully maintained, clean and free of noteworthy wear or damage. Well-bolstered front bucket seats and foldable rear bench are upholstered in handsome tweed-like cloth trimmed in gray vinyl. Door trim includes gray vinyl, gray cloth, and gray carpet inserts; Jensen® audio speakers are mounted, as are controls for the power door locks and windows. Gray cabin carpeting is protected with matching Jeep-branded carpet mats in front, rubber mats in back. The cargo-area features carpeting with rub strips, the spare tire with cover, and a roll-up cargo cover. The gray headliner is undamaged. A stock, 3-spoke, Jeep-branded steering wheel with leather-covered rim frames the full analog instrumentation including tachometer, a Laredo-package feature. The Jeep-branded original AM-FM-cassette audio system and slide-lever HVAC controls are located on the center stack; the shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the console as well as the 4WD transfer-case selector, two cupholders, and a combination armrest-storage compartment. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the excellent condition of the Jeep's various interior surfaces.)

Under the hood, the venerable and reliable 4.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder is complete with no evidence of aftermarket modifications. The engine bay is clean, with all components—including air conditioning—properly in place. Viewed from below, the chassis is similarly complete with indications of refreshed suspension and exhaust components. There is no evidence of any damage of the sort that would be the case from too-aggressive off-road driving. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)

While the more than 190 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '92 Jeep Cherokee Laredo in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

The XJ series of Jeeps remains virtually as popular today as it was when they were new. And given the longevity they're known for, with many crossing the 250,000-mile mark, that's likely to continue well into the future... particularly for well-kept examples such as this.
