“…timeless design and practicality… makes the FJ40 a true classic.” Driving.ca website, 2015

“Classic” is an oft-used accolade for the F40. Jalopnik writer, Andrew Maness: “By so many standards, the FJ40 Land Cruiser is the definitive 20th century 4x4. With an international pedigree like a Land Rover, the rugged simplicity of a Jeep, and swagger like an old Bronco, the FJ is a greatest hits album of classic trucks. Fun to look at, sure, but driving one will take your appreciation to a whole new level.” He continued: “It's a wonderfully simple vehicle that is much more than the sum of its parts, not only due to the vehicle's capabilities, but because of the things people associate with it: Toughness, adventurousness, reliability, style... the qualities of an FJ40 read like the Tinder profile of someone you'd bring home to your parents.”

The FJ 40 offered here in lime green (with white top) over black makes good on all that basic appeal, but goes well beyond to add the beauty and reliability resulting from a complete and tasteful restoration, just 2,100 miles in the past. The result is impressive on every score.

The exterior bright-green paint is free of damage, dents, dings or any evidence of excessive off-road use. The respray was the work of professionals with all appropriate surfaces—including inside the cabin, under the hood, and all door jamb and sill surfaces—properly treated. The roof and front-grille trim are painted in white; the front bumper, rear bumperettes, and various body trim pieces are painted matte-silver. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) This FJ has not been abused. The extended front bumper with space for a winch, tool storage, or auxiliary driving lights, adds increased capability in keeping with the FJ's legendary “safari readiness.” Factory badging—including the “Totota” lettering in the front grille, “Toyota Land Cruiser” emblems on the sides of the hood, and both the Toyota and “4 Wheel Drive” emblems on the rear—is all correctly in place. Cabin glass (including the curved rear-corner glass) and all lighting lenses are clear and free of cracks. The aftermarket, white, 8-spoke, 15-inch wheels are in unblemished condition and are mounted with GoodYear® Wrangler outline-white-letter 31x10.5 LT all-terrain tires. (The matching spare is mounted on the swing-away rear carrier.) The factory side-mounted radio antenna mount is still in place.

The interior retains an all-original look including the two rear center-facing bench seats and the front 3-section bench. Black-vinyl upholstery is free of excessive wear and there are no rips or tears in the material. The characteristic simplicity of the dashboard instruments is unaltered, down to and including the metal data plate with transmission operating instructions. The three-speed manual transmission shifter is mounted on the steering column. The combination of the green and silver paint colors on the dash is particularly handsome. The FJ's 3-spoke steering wheel with Toyota center emblem shows very well with negligible patina. No radio is mounted. Black carpeting covers the cabin floors. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the condition of the FJ Cruiser's various interior surfaces.)

Under the hood, the 3.8-liter inline 6-cylinder engine—painted in the body color (with yellow brackets and linkage) remains in place in a tidy and well-detailed engine bay. All associated components appear to be properly located with no indication of aftermarket performance modifications. Viewed from below, the chassis is clean and free of any damage or indication of too-aggressive off-road driving. The 2-inch lifted-suspension components, very clean lower surfaces of the engine, the 4-wheel disc brakes, and the fresh exhaust system are all visual focal points. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)

The truck's original identification tag remains mounted showing a May 1970 build and a vehicle identification number: FJ40 84181.

Just last year, Hagerty's Jeff Peek looked at the market for these legendary vehicles and concluded: “As the Toyota FJ40 market settles, now might be the time to buy.”

We tend to agree.
