“For Broncos, we tend to celebrate the years ending in '6' and '1.'" - Ford marketing executive

The year was 1991, and the Ford Bronco, in its first 25 years, had gone from bare-bones utility vehicle, to a far more comfortable, but still highly capable, full-sized four-wheel-drive vehicle; a choice for outdoorsmen, ranchers, and probably a few urban cowboys. With just under 900,000 Broncos manufactured since 1966, the Ford brass celebrated the brand's remarkable 25-year history.

Offered here is a 1991 Ford Bronco XLT in silver-and-pewter over gray with a charcoal fiberglass cargo-area roof. This is a well-maintained, highly original Bronco currently showing 112,421 miles on its odometer, or roughly 3,750 miles per-year on average since new. With the launch of the new, smaller Broncos in 2020, interest in the earlier, full-size model generations has risen dramatically.

The Bronco's exterior actually features a three-tone (silver, pewter, and dark gray) color scheme that is attractive and well-maintained. The darker pewter color graces the upper and lower panels of the truck, with the remaining sheet metal in silver. The fiberglass cargo-area roof is dark gray. A red “finishing” tape stripe is in place wherever the pewter and silver colors meet. The paint finish is excellent across the entire truck with good gloss and, with the exception of a minor ding below the tailgate, there is no significant damage to the paint or sheet metal. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Chrome bumpers, grille, added fender-edge trim, West-Coast-style side mirrors, door handles, body-side trim all show excellent gloss and no damage, with minimal patina from age and use. The XLT-specific brushed-metal tailgate trim is perfect. All cabin glass and lighting lenses are free of cracks or other damage. All factory badging—including the Ford blue-oval emblems front and rear, “Bronco XLT” emblems on the sides, and “4x4” badge below the front grille—is properly in place. A “Ford”-branded black-vinyl cover is mounted on the rear spare-tire (mounted on the swing-away carrier). Stock, 8-opening, silver-painted steel, 15-inch wheels (with chrome trim rings) are mounted with 31x5 LT all-season tires. The front axle is equipped with Warn® lock-out hubs.

The Bronco's gray interior is as well-maintained as the exterior. Two-tone gray, carpet-trimmed, XLT door panels are attractive and free of wear; power-window controls are located here. Original charcoal carpeting is installed in the cabin and the rear cargo area, and the condition throughout is good with some discoloration from use. Seat upholstery on the front and removable (and foldable) rear bench seats is a very attractive, gray tweed-like fabric in a vertically pleated design. Very light wear is present on the driver's seat, but there are no rips or tears; other seating surfaces are excellent. A lockable gray storage box with cupholders is located between the front seats. A black, multi-function, Ford-oval-logo-branded steering wheel (with rim cover) frames a black dashboard enhanced with the upmarket XLT woodgrain trim. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column, and the overdrive button is located on the dash. Instrumentation includes the large speedometer and tachometer with smaller engine-monitoring gauges; this full instrumentation was an XLT feature. The original radio and heating-ventilation-air-conditioning controls remain mounted. Four-wheel-drive controls are electronic and mounted on the dash.

Under the hood, the truck's 5-liter Ford V8 is entirely stock. All engine and component surfaces are original, and there are no obvious modifications to the powerplant. The entire engine bay is clean without being excessively detailed. Components--including air conditioning--are properly mounted. Hoses and wiring are correctly routed. Viewed from below, the chassis is complete, straight, and free of damage. The metal plate protecting the transfer case remains mounted. Surface rust is present on some untreated metal.

The Bronco's original data and identification tags remain mounted, and the original owner's manual is included in the sale.

While the more than 150 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '91 Bronco XLT in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

In their review of the fourth-generation,"bricknose" Ford Bronco XLT, back in the day, the television series summarized their take on it as "a surprisingly good truck.” True then… and still true today.
